Here are some guidelines to follow:

• Topdressing Lawns: 1/4"-1/2"
• Mulch: 2" - 4"
• Compost: 2" - 3"
• New Garden: 6" - 24"

SQUARE OR RECTANGLE AREAS

Length x Width (in feet) x Depth (in inches)/324 =  cubic yards
 
Example: Space is 12 feet by 14 feet and I want to put 4 inches down.
 
12 x 14 x 4 = 672 / 324 = 2.0 cubic yards

 
CIRCLE AREAS

 3.1426 x radius (in feet) x radius (in feet) x Depth (in inches) / 324 = cubic yards
 
Example: My pool is 24 round, how much crusher dust will I need to put underneath?
 
3.1426 x 12 x 12 = 452 / 324 = 1.4 yards
